Mrs. Reed is attending a North Central Association Conference today for Okemos High School’s NCA work.

  1. Review prefixes

Prefix – attached to the front of a word to produce a derivative word or an inflected form (dictionary.com)

A prefix is the chunk of words at the front of the word.  It has predictable pronunciations and spellings.

Prefixes can help us recognize words and their meaning

When reading, you should ask yourself the following questions:

Do I know any other words that look and sound like this word?

Are any of these look-alike/sound-alike words related to each other?

Remembering to look for prefixes will help you define words you don’t know in your reading.

Vocabulary bookmark #1 for To Kill a Mockingbird

As a class read chapter 1 out loud.

Chapter 1 is probably the chapter that could be most confusing.  In order to keep characters and events clear in your mind, go back and write a summary of chapter 1.  Your summary should include characters and the main action of chapter 1.  Turn your summary into the turn in basket.
