  1. Complete To Kill a Mockingbird questionnaire and discussion.
  2. Define and discuss culture.

culture (n.): The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, etc. characteristic of a community or population.

3. Journal #21: 11/6/09: What is important in a society?  What are important aspects of your culture and time period?  Identify at least ten elements or aspects of your own culture.

4. Share responses.

5. What do you think it would have been like during the 1930s? What aspects would be important to society in the 1930s?

6. Pre-reading research introduced. Determine partners and topics.

7. Review the assignment by defining the task. Sign up for presentation dates: Thursday, November 12 and Friday, November 13.

8. Time permitting: begin research in the library!

Homework:

1. Work on research and visual aide for your presentation on the 1930s due on Thursday, November 12.  Plan ahead. We will have reading to do next week as well!

1. Review historical narratives

2. Puritan notes and discussion

3. Discuss the contrast between Native American Literature and Puritan literature

4. In table groups discuss whether you agree or disagree with the statement, “Human beings are inherently evil and so must struggle to overcome their sinful nature.”  Explain to each other why you agree or disagree with this statement.  Write out the basic arguments and ideas of your group. Share with the class and turn in one response per table group.

5. Discuss facts about Puritans. How many of these values still hold true for us?

6. Read Bradstreet (96) and Taylor (94). Discuss reading questions.

7. Read “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”

8. Prepare for discussion on Monday

5. Time permitting; begin discussion on the questionnaire with four corners discussion.

On Friday, we will begin a research project related to To Kill a Mockingbird that includes use of a visual aide.  You may create a PowerPoint or a poster.  We will review the assignment in detail on Friday and you will have some time to work on research in class. 1. Due Thursday: Respond to Literary Analysis questions on page 29 #1 -10, p 30 vocabulary and grammar and style. Bonus point: Find the direct parallels between our constitution and “The Iroquois Constitution”.  That is, extend question 10.

Read “Museum Indians”.  Review critical reading questions on p 39 for yourself.  Make sure you can answer them for discussion.
